Today I spent some time with the Singhs. Rani and Harji are the parents of one of Errolyn's schoolmates and a family I have always enjoyed talking with in the schoolyard. This project has me visiting the homes of these acquaintances and learning more about their daily lives. Harji's mother lives with them and when I asked her name they all laughed and told me to call her Mama. As I sipped fennel tea and enjoyed homemade pakoras we talked about Indian gold and our love of eating. I'm not sure how many times I asked for a cooking lesson but I left with a goody bag of Indian fare and the promise of an outing and a feast at their temple in Queens.
